The Hit List – My Top 10 Makeup Products

The hypothetical question we’ve all been asked at one point or another…

“If you were stranded on a desert island, what items would be necessary for your survival?”

For me, my mind immediately wanders to…beauty products.  *Sigh* Definitely not the smartest choice, but let’s be real.  Statistically speaking, none of us will ever end up like Tom Hanks in Cast Away.

Here is my list of 10 beauty products that I cannot live (happily) without.

1.) Becca – Backlight Priming Filter Face Primer ($38)

I am always experimenting with primers, but this is the one that currently holds my attention.  I am all about the glow, so I am not a huge fan of a matte primer because I feel like healthy skin should always have a dewy appearance to it.  Infused with crushed pearls, this primer preps your skin for foundation by creating a smooth, flawless canvas for you to work with.  s1721281-main-zoom

2.) FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA – Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in 170 ($34)

New fav!  I was hesitant when I first heard Rihanna was launching her own brand of cosmetics because celebrity endorsed products can sometimes be a huge letdown but Rihanna knocked this out the park (YAS QUEEN YASSS.)  Not only is this my current favorite foundation (and I’ve tried MANY) but it’s super affordable at just $34!  It is matte  but not so much where you find yourself looking chalky or ashy.  My skin literally glows with it on.  Rihanna created this medium-full coverage foundation for women of all diverse shades and skin types, offering 40 (yes, 40!) shades so everyone can find their own unique color.

3.) Makeup Forever – Full Cover Concealer in Vanilla ($34)

For anyone with uneven skin tone or the occasional blemish, this stuff is the best.  I have been using it for years and never found a comparable product.  It is like a liquid camouflage in a tube and the consistency is perfection.

3.) MAC Cosmetics – Prep + Prime Highlighter in Light Boost ($27)

The Ultimate multi-use tool.  It somehow manages to brighten my under-eye circles, which never seem to want to leave me, even if I get 14-hours of sleep.  More importantly, I use this highlight EVERYWHERE.  Under my eyes, mid-forehead, along the bridge of my nose and above my cupid’s bow (the indent at the center of your top lip.)

4.) Laura Mercier – Secret Brightening Powder

I’ll be the first to let you in on this “secret.” This fluffy white powder is an essential for anyone who uses an under-eye concealer to prevent it from creasing.  You can layer it atop a cream highlight in order to set it so your makeup won’t budge.  Personally, I apply my Prep + Prime Highlighter in a big triangle shape beneath my eyes, blend with a damp BeautyBlender, then dip the blender in the powder and BAKE.  Blend well for a flawless finish.

5.) Too Faced – Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer in Milk Chocolate ($30)

Due to the fact that I have pasty white porcelain skin, this product is a must.  I love that it has a matte finish because it is perfect for achieving that chiseled contour look that we all crave.  I have to be careful with bronzers because I can easily resemble Snooki if the color is too warm but the bronze pigments neutralize red tones and it enhances all skin tones.  Did I mention that it smells exactly like cocoa?!

6.) Anastasia Beverly Hills – Brow Wiz in Dark Brown ($21)

Although I have naturally thick, dark brows, I have areas where hair is sparse & refuses to grow back (I’m still healing from the 90’s pencil-thin eyebrows trend.) This is perfect for those who want to add hair-like strokes and I find it easier to use than their Dipbrow Pomade.  Just be careful to match the color exactly and don’t use a color that is too dark (ladies, you know who you are.)

7.) MAC Cosmetics – Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft & Gentle ($34)

I have MANY highlighters but this is my ultimate go-to.  It is a peachy-bronze shade that gives a natural, yet buildable glow.  I’ve found it looks gorgeous on many different skin colors since my friends always ask to borrow 🙂  This goes on best with a fan brush, applied diagonally along the cheekbone to the outer corner of your eye.  Wanna get crazier? (Obviously, the more highlighter the better)  Apply down the center of your nose, onto your brow bone, and on top of your cupid’s bow.  GLOW UP.

8.) Kat Von D – Tattoo Liner in Trooper ($20)

I am a liquid eyeliner junkie.  I don’t leave home without it.  Kat Von D is the best for executing the perfect cat-eye, whether subtle or edgy.  Trooper is the blackest of black that is on the market.  End of story.

9.) NARS- Blush in Sin ($30)

I’m a firm believer in a hint of color on the cheeks, and Sin is my favorite winter blush for that natural, flushed look.  It’s a berry shade with gold shimmer to compliment your highlight.  If you’re like me, and have a complexion like Casper the friendly ghost, GO EASY.  Lightly tap off excess blush from your brush before applying to the apples of the cheeks or else you’ll wind up looking like a cockatiel.

10.) MAC Cosmetics – Lip Pencil in Whirl ($17.50) & MAC Cosmetics – Satin Lipstick in Faux

That’s right.  Number 10 on my list is a 2-for-1 special for my favorite nude lip.  Whirl is my favorite lip pencil.  I keep sharpening it until I can no longer hold it between my fingers any longer.  Whirl became one of MAC’s most coveted liners when Kylie’s lips began growing exponentially in 2015 and women everywhere were trying to recreate her signature nude lip.  Kylie literally created a Whirl shortage at MAC locations across the country, so what did MAC do? Made Whirl into a lipstick so now you can have the best of both worlds.  My personal favorite to pair with Whirl liner is Faux.  Faux is a creamy, muted mauve-pink that looks good on any skin color.  This is the one lipstick I consistently use until it’s gone.

So, there it is.  My Top Ten Makeup Essentials
