Facial Oils vs. Moisturizers – Why You Should Make the Switch

2017 was the year of the serum.  Hydrating serums, anti-aging serums, anti-redness serums, and the list goes on.  But is 2018 the year of facial oil? Let me explain why I decided to ditch the moisturizers & replaced them with a facial oil. *GASP*

Facial oils may seem like a new trend but they’ve actually been around for centuries.  It is believed that Cleopatra used moringa oil to help preserve her youthful skin and French queens utilized carrot seed oil as their beauty elixir of choice.  I figured if the Queen of the Nile used it, I’m willing to give it a go.

So we use oils on our hair, to cook our food, but using oil on my face? Won’t I look like I slathered myself in Crisco? No. Most people might cringe at the thought of putting oil on their face, especially those with already oily skin (I feel you oily T-Zone people!) The thing is, it’s actually the complete opposite.  Facial oils can help with oil regulation.  A lot of time, oily skin is actually caused by over-cleansing and stripping your skin of it’s natural oils, so what does the body do? It produces MORE oil. Want less oily skin? Replenish your skin with natural oils and your skin will be balanced and much happier 🙂

Living in New York City is amazing, but NYC is home to some of the harshest winters around.  Outside, the temperature plummets and many compensate by cranking up the heat inside, and this can be a recipe for incredibly dry skin.  For those of us sending out an SOS for dry winter skin, there’s good news…facial oils can be the cure for all those who suffer!  Oils replenish the skin with essential fatty acids that protect & restore your skins’ barrier from a combo of ailments like extreme temperatures, over-cleansing, and travel (post-flight skin = THE WORST.)

Still hesitant about giving up your moisturizer? Let’s compare the two.  Your moisturizer already has oil in it, but not enough to truly benefit your skin because it’s mixed with water & emulsions which tend to sit on the surface.  Ever feel tight & dry almost immediately after applying? That’s why.  Oils penetrate deeper into the skin because they pass easily through the lipid barrier, making it able to retain moisture and plump up the skin.  Plump skin = less fine lines and more glowing, radiant skin.  (Yes, please!)

Keep in mind when looking for the right facial oil, steer clear of oils that contain fragrance or essential oils, as these ingredients can cause skin irritation.  Oils can be mixed into moisturizers or sunscreens, or can be used on their own.  With all skincare products, you should use any new product consistently for at least 2 weeks to determine if you are seeing the desired results.  In other words, BE PATIENT MY FRIENDS.

My current favorite, Marie Veronique – Barrier Lipid Complex ($95)

I give the bottle a good shake, drop 4 droplets into my palm, rub my hands together to warm it up, and then press into the skin.  It may take a few minutes for the oil to completely absorb into the skin so give it a few before applying makeup.

Here are a few of my other top choices:

What are your favorite moisturizing products?

Confess!

  1. My moisturizer 😂 I would not put oils on my face, simply because the sun and oils on my face do not mix and I live in Up, Upstate NY.

    1. So funny! I’m from Upstate NY also! I think you might be thinking of tanning oils (NEVER DO THAT!) The oils I mentioned are for all types of skin and you can layer your sunscreen on top of them. Don’t be afraid! Grab a sample of any facial oil from a Sephora employee and just try it for a day!

    1. Yes! Especially in winter, oils let your skin retain that much needed moisture!
